    Coils and Chords

    Hi all!

Just wondering: is there any advantage to using coiled chords/wires for your connections (a la telephone, like the one connecting the handset to the base set)? I know they provide some "stretch", but how do they hold up in terms of interference?

    No Problem

I have not experienced, or heard of any experience, where there was an issue with coiled cords, unless you are around a lot of RF and the wire you use for your cord is not shielded properly. Or perhaps, if you are working with very weak signals. What is the application?

The idea is to use them between the motors and controllers/drives, to allow for the movement of the gantry (i.e. instead of a channel). Will it work? No use in using something like this if the interference will cause problems...

Snooper, generally those types of leads are not shielded and do not have very large conductors. They are nice and flexible though. I have seen some larger conductor sizes in hanging pendant type light fittings but usually only 2 or 3 core. Microphone cable might be more suited, shielded, lots of strands (the more the better - better conduction and flex)

If you had some that was shielded and large enough then it would be fine.

Russell, do you think the microphone cables will handle the current?

I'm sure I have seen 0.5 sqmm 4 core cable like this, I didn't get any as I wanted 6 core at the time. This is about 20 AWG by the way. I'll try to track down where I saw it for you if you like, it was about 2000 web pages ago...
