    testing a coil

Hello I have a couple of magnetic contacters in a lathe. My question is is there a way to test to see if a coil inside the contactor is good. I accidentaly hooked up a wire wrong and had a puff of smoke come out when I took it apart it looked like there were a few black marks by the coil.

Probabally the easiest is to just connect the coils up direct the supply, make sure you have the right supply AC,DC, voltage etc.
You may have just marked them cosmetically due to the electrical flash from the error you made, but not neccessarily damaged the coil (unless the wrong supply used)!
If they are AC coils do not power them when removed from the contactor or they will burn up.
