Question Stepper Motor and Driver Questions?

I have heard of people taking Stepper Motors and the drivers for them out of used floppy disk drives.

So here is my question. What floppy drives have them and which ones don't? What does the driver look like? etc....

I just want something to play with. Kind of like just to make them rotate and stop and go the other way.

I am new to the CnC arena and i have no electronics training.

I would like to make me a CnC router someday and i gotta start somewhere.

    thanks in advance.

I am not sure if the drives in floppy disks use step and direction inputs. If not they won't be too easy to control with the more easily available cnc software.

Then again, I am just guessing.

Really old 5 1/2" drives had stepper motors. You won't find anything useful in the 3 1/2" drives of today. You're best to search old printers for them, but again, you're less likely to find one in more recent printers.

New floppies have steppers but they are very small. You can use them to learn but they won't drive a thing (just like old 5.25 floppy steppers.)

I started playing with stepper motor using the 5.25" floppy disk drive motors as they are literally FREE (if you can find them ) Most of them are unipolar but they are some bipolar as well.

Simplest circuit, IMHO, is to use the ULN2803 as driver connected direct to PC parallel port and driven by a 5V supply (unipolar motor off course).

Check out these sites for additional ideas:

    Have fun.
