I have a set of nema 34 motors rated at: Bipolar Parallel - 6.3 A/phase and 1.4 VDC Bipolar Series - 3.18 A/phase 2.8 VDC I am going to be using Gecko 212's and need to decide on a power supply. I read in the Gecko manual that power supplies should be no more than 25 times the voltage. To me this means that I should be using a power supply of no more than 35V in bipolar parallel mode. However the toque curve chart that is given with these motors (follow link above and click on speed - torque characteristics on the right of the page) says that the voltage input was 60VDC. Is this possible and is this safe? Does anyone have recommendations as to what power supply to use? I was considering this one as I can't seem to find a 60 VDC manufactured supply. Thanks in advance. Dan

| Is this possible? Yes Is this safe? Yes with proviso's Since current is being regulated by the controller card, I'm pretty sure that current is folded back at some point in time - thus the 60vdc of the p/s is NOT on at full voltage continuously so you aren't drawing peak current continuously. The high voltage provides a FAST way to energize the coils to get better speed if I recall. I"d say that if you run what the motor maker recommends, and have a controller card that is compatible, you should be just fine. Seem to recall that lower voltage will result in lower speed potential. The issue of stepper motor power supply sizing has been discussed in a number of prior threads. Try "stepper motor power supply" search on this website.... |
