I have got a copy machine, which can be used as the source of stepping motors, drivers etc. The motors are STP42D225-04 1.8deg/step 2.4Ohm. They are driven with STK672-040 chip. datasheet The power supply provides 24V and 5V. I would like to use them (if possible) for my first CNC-mill. I just want to begin. Do not ask me about my experience in electronics But I’m very motivated. So, I need some suggestions: how to connect the driver to LPT-port, do I need some kind of controller between them? Is there an example somewhere? On the 6th page of datasheet, if I understand correctly, the pin 15 (direction) should be not just grounded but connected to the LPT(?), 18(enable) set to HIGH. Can I get CLK (pin 14) from PC? The reason to use these parts is pretty simple: I have them already. But maybe it is a wrong way? Thank you

Answers to questions is order of presentation; Yes, you probably need a driver. Yes, MACH 3 is a control system that does it. There are an number of ways to interface a parallel port to darn near anything. You are merely limited by your creativity and your knowledge base. TO increase the latter: Do a "parallel port interfacing" search on google. Do a "parallel port drive" search on this website search engine. This should get you going....

If you use Mach2 on the PC, it will output a step (clock) and Dir (direction) signal to the lpt port pin of your choice. This should be compatible with the driver chip you're using. Ideally, you should build a simple opto coupler circuit so that you don't burn out your PC if you make a mistake.
