Well, my free samples came in. Those damn things are small.

Any suggestions on how to handle the soldering of them other than (1) carefully, (2) steady hands and (3) Large magniufying glass?

Their going into the s3977 of Phils (actually it's oes modification with the 12V regulator.

Flux, a holding device, fine tipped soldering iron no more than 25W. One of the challenges with a homemade pcb is the lack of solder mask. You can help by getting a pen that does solder mask repair. And practice before you put the actual chip on.

I was thinking of using a on top of board (as opposed to through the board) socket. I've identified a couple at digikey for about 75 cents each

A3977SED and A3977KED are the same part, just the lead free version. Digikey has both:
