    Basic Motor Wiring

Hi All, First post here after just picking up a Logan 1875.

The lathe had a 3-prong, 125V 15A twist lock plug. After changing that to a regular flat blade plug, the motor hums and barely turns, so it must have been wired for 220.

The diagram on the motor says the following:

    Model HDN56MRC17F1O (made in China)

    Low Voltage:

    Yellow-White-Black -Line2
    Orange-P5-Red-INS
    T1-Blue-INS
    P1-Line1

I'm confused because in the electric box, there are just two groups of 4 wires
coming from the motor, 4 wires go to the reversing power switch, and I do not know what P1, P5, and T1 are. I assume "INS" means insulated...

This seemingly trivial task is the next obstacle for me now. Thanks for any help here.

    Update

Hi All, I just scrapped the idea of 110 and ran a 220 outlet. Seems risky to run just a neutral and two hots, but that's the way the dryer's always been...

Now it's off to learning about the lathe.

Dangerous without a Ground, you probabally had a 220 and ground, no neutral?
Sounds like you were running a dryer with no ground also?
Do you not have any history of the lathe at all?

    That's what I figured - dangerous...

I bought two machines from an older gentleman - an Enco RF-30 Mill with x-y DRO and 3-axis power feeds, plus the Logan 1875, and a bunch of end mills and cutters. He had them outside in a make-shift shed and was letting them waste away.

By "neutral" I presume you mean the return has to be insulated, and it is not. I found a 30+30 amp dedicated line that went to the air conditioner, which was fed with "romex" - although I'm not sure if the AC has some other ground.

The panel is only about 25 feet away, so I can run a proper feed and get new plugs. Right now I just wanted to soak everything in ATF and get things moving around so I could get them cleaned up - I'm trying to avoid a tear down.
