my friend can obtain small ( 874 oz-in ) stepper motors with mircostepping drivers. Motors are 2 phase, 2 / 4 amps 8 wires.

My question is controllers / interface units

Can I just build breakout board like Phils http://pminmo.com/.
Do controller boards need to be matched to motors and drivers in regards to voltage and amp?

I though it was the drivers whom regulated the voltage and amps, and the controller just provided the step and direction.

Can drivers be hardwired to printer cable?

or just purchase a commercial controller like Gecko?
