Can anyone tell me I have a 7 wire Optical Encoder Model# K3 DM-1200 -5AS-6B Serial #91082364.It is attached to a Aerotech brush motor. Aerotech calls it a Tachometer. Is a tachometer and a encoder the same? I want to find controlles for the motors.

Can someone tell me what the differance between an encoder and a tachometer is or is there a differance?

With Aerotech the sheets usually need some decifering, per the sheets I sent do you have plug A,B or C? And what pins are the 7 wires attached to.
Unfortunately I found they use sin cos marker whether the motor is fitted with an encoder or a resolver.
The wires may indicate what you have.
Also if it is possible, if you can remove the screws in the back cover, you can look inside and get an idea if an encoder or resolver is fitted.
also the plug designations cover the connection for DC and DCBL motors.

Al, The prints show that I have the MS24-28S Plug #C. Out of the "encoder",com,enc=5V,M-,M,cos,cos,sin. Also two wires going to the motor are y and z, the print calls them tach. Would you say it is a encoder?

I would interpret that as com,+5vdc, motor +&-, the cos-sin I don't think would be a resolver as two conductors each would be needed, these may be the A,B&Z marker but single ended.
The yz could well be a tach, the way to find out is without any power to the unit, put a voltmeter on the xy wires and spin the shaft, if a DC tach, this will put out a DC voltage dependent on rpm and reverse in the opposite direction.
You may have to do some reverse engineering on the sin/cos signals by powering up the com&5v and seeing what transpires on the leads when you turn the shaft really slowly.
The tach it not needed on most drives now that use torque mode of operation.
