I purchased an old milling machine with a 3HP 3PH motor. I followed some online instructions for building a home made rotary converter. My first attempt with only a starter capacitor produced very rough starts but then quiet running with voltages of 209, 223, and 241. I then installed 2 run capacitors. Rough start, but voltages without the mill running of, 223,224,225. I was pretty happy. But, when I start the mill motor, there is a little lightning in the contactor, (very short time), and the running voltages are 223, 225, 240. I also discovered the idler will start without the start capacitor, a smoother start too. Okay, should I play with more capacitors, or am I good to go? Is a little lightning normal? Should I start the idler without using the start capacitor? Thanks, Ozzie |
