Hello I have been doing some reading and some seem to build their own power supplies using full bridge rectifiers and fat capacitors. This under load will cause a ripple/ac component without regulation. Is it still possible to use impure DC to supply a brushless DC motor and if yes what will be the side effects compared to running the brushless motor using a pure DC supply (motor heat , noise , steady speed?) I'm looking at 340 VDC, 3A continuous 240/240 isolation transformer -> Full Bridge Rectifier-> Caps or 240/110 and two 170 VDC in series |

| For that supply to obtain ~5% -10% ripple which is perfectly acceptable you would not need any more than a 5000µf capacitor. Unregulated linear supplies are very prevalent in servo/stepper supplies. Al.

| My preference is always the linear supply, they do the job just fine and generally are more rugged than switching, even a linear regulated supply. Switching supplies can be very difficult to repair or find original parts in many cases. Al.
