    IC problem

    Hello.

I got a problem here about the Integrated Circuit (IC).
It's about L297 stepper motor controller and L298 h bridge IC.
Actually, I'm in progress to built my first CNC gantry..

The problem is; from my reading through book, I learn that L297/L298 integrated circuits can be applied to control the step-syn motors (rated 4.5 volts) or the pacific Scientific motor (maximum of 170 volts).

But both of the stepper motor are hard to find here.
So can I used another type of stepper motor? How about it specifications I need?

    thanks

    Hi Muzzakkir,

Welcome (or should I say "Selamat Datang") to CNCZone and be prepared to get hooked I've been here from the beginning and it's wonderful to see people worldwide sharing idea so freely.

Back to your question. L297/298 combination are designed for bipolar motors. You can use any stepper motors (4-wires, 6-wires, 8-wires) with it. Spec of your motors depends on a LOT of factors such as torque, power supply, cost, etc. I've been using motors from scrap dot matrix printers. Check out several of my threads for some additional info.

p/s. I'm in KL, whereabout are you? May be can meet up and share some ideas, experience

    Hi Mr abasir,

    Sorry for a late reply.

Actually, Muzzammil1444 and Muzzakkir is a same person, but I'm going to change my user name to Muzzammil1444 permanently
I'm shocked, the words U used, "Selamat Datang"..

Let me introduce myself first. I'm now still studyng in KUiTTHO Batu Pahat, Johor. So this 'Gantry CNC project' is for my thesis project. I'm still younger =)
Well, Mr abasir I have read your Pictorial Guide to DIY PCB making, and it is very usefull. This week I'm going to use the method in producing PCB for my project.

I decide to use 'Taiwan made stepper motor' which is bipolar motor with 8-wires. Actually, it's more cheaper and low cost.. How about your suggestion?

    Thanks

Like I said earlier, your mechanical design will dictate your stepper/driver requirement. What's the spec of your motors (Voltage, Amp, Torque)?

Do you have you plans ready, if not why not check out the JGRO free plan available here (maybe do some improvement as part of your thesis).

You have access to a VERY wide range of people here, from people who have been in CNC machining for tens of years to a young newbie starting to get into the hobby. Also people with sound electronic/electrical background that can comment on your circuit design. Feel free to ask, I'm sure someone will attend to your needs.

The spec of the motors are 5 Volt, and 1.5 Amp.
The model size is 3x2x2 ft. But, I still can't decide the suitable size and torque for the motors yet.

Well, I have used the JGRO plan with improvement of the design.

For sure, I'm young newbie here. So the best way,I'll open a topic for my project in woodwoking progress log book soon.
So, Mr Abasir how can we meet up to share our knowledge, gain your suggestion and opinion? Can I have your contact number and address?

Last question: How can I upload an image through this forum site? Sorry, stupid questions make me smarter. (",)

P/S: Aii, kecik dunia ni. Power speaking.. ingatkan Mat saleh.. heheh.

Go to "Manage Attachment", attach the image there and upload. If you want to carry out 1-to-1 conversation, use the Private Message section.

Edit: I think the steppers are okay. Just make sure your design consider the deflection of the pipe; gonna be noticeable for the 3ft sides.
