    Cables

    Hi there,

Just a quick question. Is 'normal' 6 core wire rated at 2.5amps suitable for stepper motor wires from the control board? I'd like to avoid any 'fancy' shielded wire etc, purely for cost reasons.

    Thanks

It depends what you call Normal? In N.America control wiring 22 gauge is rated 3amps, 20g = 5 amps. I wouldn't consider shielded cable, Fancy, especially when it is used in an application it is intended for. Here that type of shielded cable at that guage is between 25c and 50c a foot.

    Hi there,

I see what you're getting at. Could you perhaps tell me if the cable from the following link would be suitable. It will be used with a Xylotex board.

There is also a shielded version, but it is nearly twice the price. I know it isn't over-the-top, but I can only find it in 25m lengths, so it becomes quite expensive...

    Thanks

That item appears to be 20AWG or 21SWG in UK. The current rating looks like it is lower than N.A. standard. If you use unshielded, the problem is that if you find that you have noise problems later, it cost twice as much to fix.
