I need to connect a computer parallel port to a cnc communication board. I have some BTR software to send a program into a cnc by wireing a parallel cable into the cnc com board. I have done this to an old Yasnac 2000 control and it works great, we still run the machine every day. When i bought the software the company sold me a parallel cable that they made and explained which wires to connect it to on the cnc. Basically you simply connect a parallel cable to where the tape reader connects on the com board. Then connect the cable to the computer and send the program in with the software. Its basicaly a cheap BTR, just software and no expensive BTR device needed. So my question is, how do i know which wire from the tape reader is what? We have a few machines that i would like to set this up with but im not sure how to figure out which wire should connect to which. |

| Are you sure that is a 25 pin parallel port and not a 25 pin serial port which connects to the 9 pin serial on a computer. Tape readers and CNCs use the serial port. A parallel conection would be very very unusual, if at all possible. Check out RS232 posts at this forum for a wealth of info on cable connections. |

| I am well familiar with RS 232 serial communications, i use it numerous times every day. Using the parallel port from the pc you obviously cant recieve from the machine, you can only send code into the control. To get a program out you still have to use the paper punch method. The software i have takes the place of an actual BTR device on the machine itself, its the same thing basicly. I just am not skilled enough to figure out which wire coming out of the tape reader and connecting to the com board is what. All i really need is to know is how to figure out what wire from the tape reader is Send, RTS etc. etc. . |

| On the contrary, parallel ports are bi-directional and can recieve, but the machine has to be able to send on comand. A paper punch tape drive reads the holes in the tape in parallel fashion (with the smaller sprocket holes often used as a strobe pulse to enable the read of the other 7 holes) and passes the data out that way. Figuring out which wire is which on a specific tape reader will probably mean you'll need the manual at least. I used to work with a Talley tape reader that was used to load programs into an automated test station. The tape library filled a 20' by 50' room with 10" reels of tape. If I recall correctly, the data / control connection only had 12 wires, 7 of which were data, one strobe, one EOT, one forward, one reverse, and a ground. The reader itself had no smarts at all, just motors with drivers, a light bulb, and a read head with amplifiers. Steve |

1/ Count number of signal wires connected: RS232 use maximum 8 wires (normally 5 wires) during LTP use more than 9 wires. 2/Let see the name of signal wires. If their names are TX, RX, RTS...the port is RS232. If their names are CH1, CH2 ...Ch8 (Or D1, D2... D8), the port is LPT. Here are BTR connection diagram for machine use Sanyo Denki 2302C tape reader: PC (Printer port) CNC (Tape reader port) Meaning Pin 2 to Pin 9 (output) CH1 to CH8 Data lines Pin 11* (input) TRUN (FM) Enable Pin 16* (output) RP (PS) Clock * The pin numbers depend on your software See http://ds.lib.kyutech.ac.jp/dspace/b...ng13_p1_10.pdf Some information hope it useful for you. Could you share me the BTR software? I need it to communicate with my Okuma Mill. Besides, I can tell you which pin on LPT connect to FM and PS signal if I have the software.
