Building encoder with a steppermotor

Hello all.
I know there is a way to build a rotary encoder from a steppermotor but how do i build the electronics?
I want to have that encoder as MPG in a pendant for Mach3.
I have a lot of steppers in my shop and i want to use steppers with 200 steps/rev.
Sorry for my English.

You will only need a circuit that converts sine waves from stepper to square waves. That is simple comparator circuit with hysteresis.

I saw ready schematics for that somewhere in the net but can't find it right now :P It was something like this but with input clamping to protect the opamp:

It probably won't work very well at low speeds because the signal is too small. A low cost encoder can be bought new for less than $10.

I believe the zip file I loaded it uses exitation for one winding and gets output from the other?
I havent tried it BTW.

The circuit you loaded has nothing to do with encoders. I appears to be a circuit that takes an RC servo signal and converts it to something or another.

Here's an Idea

I have a stepper motor from an old printer, with encoder attached
this would work, it would have the "feel" of a MPG, I could
use the encoder only

Any thoughts?
