Yup. They are expensive. Depending on the environment though, they might be worth it. I found four new in the box Omron limit switches on Ebay. I was the only bidder -- $10 for the lot, plus about $10 shipping.
If you can keep the dirt, oil, dust, etc out, plain old microswitches would do the job. They are cheap and reliable.
Depending on how you are configured, the limit switches might never be used. But you would hate to discover that they had failed the one time you need them.
