Question Solidworks SolidCAM & XYZ Machine tools

I am new to this industry and to this forum,

I am wondering if anyone could give me any ideas on how i would go about importing DWG. files from Solidworks to Solid CAM, and then what I would need to do in order for the XYZ Machine tools CNC Lathe and Mill at my University to read the CAM files.

I have grasped drawing parts in Solidworks, but my lecturers are'nt trained to use our machinery so they are useless to me.

If anyone could give me any information on the processes i need to go through to get from a DWG. to a machined component it would be much, much appreciated.

Please help me, I have a passion for engineering but need am in desparate need of guidance.

Hi:
SolidCam can deal with flat (2D) drawings from SolidWorks.
2 otpions:
1. Import the dwg into SW, then launch SolidCam.
Design the toolpaths, and Gcode using appropriate Post Processor.
2.Import dwg into SW, convert to Solids, then launch SolidCam, repeat toolpath post etc.
With all due respect, without proper training, or skilled guidance, you will hurt yourself. I'd recommend just going to the point of learning to program the toolpaths, starting with 2.5 axis. Learn to design clean parts, and detail them, so that you can make them on conventional tools. With no machining experience, the learning curve will be very steep. the good news is that if you want to learn, there is lot's of information out there.

regards, and good luck

I agree that you should get some training. I use Solid cam and it was only a 3 day course to get started, expensive tho $3000nz. The suppliers of the software also wrote a new postprocessor code so that the Gcode generated would be understood by the machine.

All the best!
