Can anyone define open architecture controls for me? I'm reading an article in Modern Machine Shop (November 2006, CNCs Accomodate Various Automation Setups) and they use the term to describe a type of CNC control that allows a particular manufacturer the ability to adapt, add on auxiliary equipment and track data. What specifically is it and how have any of you utilized it in your experiences? Also and Pros and Cons of open architecture. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. |

| Well, in the world of PC computers, the 1st IBM PC introduced "Open Architecture". That meant there were extra slots on the main board for pluging in new boards to do different things! Better video, modems, sound, etc. Prior to that a computer was limited to what it was designed to do in the factory. So a CNC machine which is Open, should easily accept extra features like touch probes, extra memory, 4th & 5th axis units, floppy drives, tape drives, networking, etc. I hope this helps! |
