PCNC Dos trouble

after connecting a newer PC to my machine, and using PCNC,
I came across a problem that I just could not solve !!

every time after a few minutes my Keyboard just shut off, the motion
that my machine was making kept on going, and I was unable to stop
the action trough the keyboard as it would not respond anymore ???

it's probably a Bios setting...but what and where is it
anybody got an idea.

Question

Let's start with the obvious. Have you tried another keyboard?

Have you disabled all of those PowerSave/EnergyStar BIOS settings for your motherboard?

Do you notice anything getting too hot? Any cooling fans not turning properly?

Check it out and let us know,

HayTay

yup did all that, it started when I thought the old keyboard was
broken, so bought a new one, and still got the same problem

it's a PS2 keyboard
all the fans are running, when it runs Win98 there is no problem whatsoever.
disabled are power settings...no dice

oh and when working in the Bios setup, it keeps on working, only when PCNC
runs it shuts of after a few mins.

so what next

btw thanks for the quick reply

Operating System glitch..??

Well, you sort of answered your own question there.. if it works fine in win98, but not in PCNC Dos, then the issue has to be in the operating program.. any chance that program has sleep timers of it;s own that are affecting the keyboard? will try to research it.. never heard of PCNC before..

Eddie

p.s.. D/L'ing manual as I type this.. hopefully something in there about this ..

*EDIT* .. Read the manual.. nothing there.. Question, therefore, does the keyboard quit working if you leave the computer running in DOS, but without PCNC loaded? try turning the system on, but only in DOS, not win98.. after about 15 minutes, try typing the command to run the PCNC program.. does the keyboard work? if so, the problem is in PCNC. best option at that point is to uninstall and re-install the program. Maybe it is a corrupted install causing difficulties.

Sounds like the computer is locked up. I've had a computer lock up ocassionally and stop responding to keyboard and mouse, but fortunately, I was not running a machine at the same time.

I had a user with this problem (only in TCNC, not PCNC), after a few rounds of troubleshooting it turned out that the computer wasn't grounded so stray electrical noise from the steppers/spindle etc would lock it up.

Hopefully it's that simple for you...

I tested it out with the program running but without switching the machine on,
and it still quits working after a few mins, so no noise from the steppers.

working in Dos or the Bios is no problem, I've been looking for hours on end in the Bios
to try diff stuff and all the time the keyboard works !!

I have another older Comp also with PCNC, that I'm using now, and it works perfectly.
installed the same way, the only diff is the older keyboard plug it uses.
so thats the only diff between the two PC's now

I wan't to use the newer PC as it is faster and has USB, so I can use a memory stick
to load the files via Win.

thanks for the help so far guys

BTW this is the project I'm working on now.

The problem obviously centers on this keyboard and how it is connected to the computers. Are you connecting an old keyboard thru an adapter like a AT to PS2? The newer computer may actually be timing out while trying to communicate with the keyboard.

rebuild the newer system install

I am still tending to blame a corrupted install.

Can you copy the ENTIRE directory (file for file) to diskj, and then place them on the newer system in a second directory. Or better yet, back up the current directory on the newer system, then erase it, and rebuild it using the files from the older system.
See if that corrects the issue.. After that, i would tend to agree that it might be a timing issue, although I have never run across that happening in 25 years of computer work *Grin*

This is the advantage to DOS based programs.. no registry entries, so you can generally copy and place on a new system with no difficulties, other than configuration files for timing (CPU Speed), monitor, etc..

I'll give that a try, the folder is pretty small so it should work.

thanks for the idea
