Looking for semi-cheap CAD software

Hey Guys,

I'm going through with my mini-mill conversion, and I need CNC software. I've tried CAD X11, with little success. Can anyone reccomend me some relatively inexpensive CAD software that supports 3D?

Thanks guys,
Burn

Heh...I'll give alibre express a go and let you know. Is there a steep learning curve?

There is a learning curve for parametric modellers in general. Alibre has decent tutorials and online videos. Don't try to use it without going through them. I was new to 3D modellers about 4 months ago. Now I don't know how I managed without one. Especially if you are designing mechanical type assemblies it is really nice to try different designs and change dimensions on the fly. I have to admit I use Solidworks and don't use alibre but I have played with the free version and they are very similar to each other.

Got another question- When I have my DXF file, how can I convert it into G-code?

This is where you now need CAM software to do the conversion.
There is lots of options, but 3D CAM is much more expensive than 2.5 D CAM software.
From my reading MeshCam is the cheapest 3D Cam software availiable. http://www.grzsoftware.com/

Buy me a Beer?

For most parts that you'll model in Alibre, a 2.5D CAM program will probably be a better option. Check out www.sheetcam.com

Hmm...In Mach3, it lets me generate a G-Code .tap file by clicking on import DXF from the file menu.

Both have demos. Try them and see which one works best for the type of work you plan on doing. Les will give you a 30 day code for SheetCAm if you ask him.(email)

Yes, Mach3 will create g-code from .dxf files. SheetCAM will give you much more control over the process. Also try out Mach3's new .dxf converter, LazyCAM. Free with Mach3.
