How does G 41, G42 works ?

Hello,

I am trying to understand how g41 or g42 works. Does anybody know where I can find a good explanation of how this works?

May be i seem quite naive but I cant help it.I am a newbie.

Please respond as I just cant visualize about the need/process of cutter/tool radius compensation whether right/left !!!

Please help me out.

Also, if you want to use it on a lathe, Turning is G42 and Boring is G41.

Dont for get to cancel it with a G40 after you've finished using that tool.

Also, dont forget to input the TNR (Tool Nose Radius) and the relevant T number in the offset page which is usually 2 for boring and 3 for turning with M03 right handed tools.

ok let me try to keep this real simple in case that is what your looking for.
first cutter compensation allows you to use your controller to adjust how big your program thinks your cutter is, so you can adjust the size your endmill is cutting without reprogramming.
the controller gets this info from the tool page where you put you tlo. you will also have a space for diameter.

some controllers use tool radius and some use tool diameter

when i first started with comp. i was told to pretend i was the endmill walking around my profile, if i'm taking a climb cut around the outside of the part then i, as the cutter, would be on the left side of the edge i'm cutting with the part on my right side this is g41 cutter compensation left. if i was taking a conventional cut then i, as the cutter, would be on the right side of the edge i'm cutting with the part on my left side this is g42 cutter compensation right.

visualizing myself as the cutter and which side of the part i was on helped me to get used to it when i started writing programs for cncs.

depending on your machine controller there may be other requirements you will have to meet.

some can't turn comp off without a linear axis move if your doing an arc.

some have a minimum length on the lead in to get comp turned on correctly.

depends on your programming methods as to what dia. you put in on the tool offset page.
some people program cutter centerline and put the actual dia. of tool in offset page, i program using the tool diameter and only comp out the deviation from nominal.

i hope this is what your looking for and i didn't insult you by starting out so basic.

are you doing lathes or mills?

Thnks and could you arrange for me to have a GCView ?

Thnks mrainey.

The link seems useful.I surfed thru cnczone.com and downloaded the tutorial. It would be great for me if you could supply some more info on tutorial websites.

I visited to www.cncperfect.com found from the techlinks of www.cnczone.com.com

They seemed to have stopped letting the dowloadable trial version of GCView Software. Can anyone help me get it free ?

Cuz I cant afford to buy for it right now and may be mrainey or someone out there help me out with the help of kazaa or something ?

Regards to all the CNCGURUS,

Shafiq
