Hi, I'm am new to the CAD/CAM field and I have some questions about solid models. I work in the Alum. diecast mold industry and most of the time I get a solid model from the customer and there maybe some flaws in the model like 95% of the time, some of the people that I have talk to told me that they just keep raising the file tolerance until it will sew together and if the tolerance gets to high they will fix part of the model, its a very high dollar program. The program I am using does not have this function and will not cut the model in half do to the poor file tolerance of the part. I am wondering if there is any inexpensive cam programs that will cut theses models in half even if there is some bad spots in the model, I have some examples to down load if any one wants to give it a shot. Is there any $1000 to $4000 range that will do this. Does anyone else run into this problem, with customer supplied models? And how do you work around it. Thanks Mitch http://webpages.charter.net/ms61/PART%20parasolid.zip http://webpages.charter.net/ms61/part%20xfa%20file.zip Last edited by motomitch1; 07-24-2005 at 09:35 AM. Reason: add pic |

| What software was the model drawn in, SolidWorks? What CAM software are you using? Most of the time when this happens to me, it just a matter of the translator. Each program handles the different types of files just a little different. Do they have to send you the ParaSolid, or can it be IGS, STEP, SAT, or other? And in all those types of files there are different versions and options, sounds like you just have to both get together and see what works for you. |

| The models come in every possible format from several different die cast companies and from the die casters customer. Then it comes to my work where engineering uses it to creates molds with then they out put it from UG as a step file for me so I can import it into ONECNC XR PRO and when I import it comes in at .001 to .003 and they tell me there is nothing they can do about it, so I set there days on in trying to work with these models that wont work right with ONECNC because of the high file tolerance, It will not let me differance it from blocks or cut it in half. I use it to design and build trim dies for the mold which is, hour wise is10% to 12% of what it cost to build the mold. Thanks Mitch |

| Mitch, I dont know if this is a solution to your problem but, it is worth a shot because it will be free at first and if it works you can buy RHINO for about $700. Download the Rhino demo and it will allow you 25 saves. You can import and export a wider range of files than you can in OneCnc. You can export parasolid files from RHINO but, I dont think you can import them. Also from what I have tried you can import and export 3dm. (RHINO) files "as is" betweem OneCnc and RHINO pretty much flawlessly....... Patrick |
