Rhino or Onecnc ? That is the question.

Hi Guys,
I have a copy of Rhino 3.0 coming and am close to purchasing CAM software.

Do I go with Rhinocam(visualmill 5.0 Basic), or Onecnc mill express?

Initially, I'll be using it for 2D musical instrument inlays, but am looking at milling guitar parts with in the next year,(3D).
Price wise, I can buy Rhinocam for $800.00, Onecnc express is $1250.00.

I'm new to CNC and don't even have a machine yet; there are enough expensive tables out there!

I'm looking at primarily function and ease of use since I have a typical backlog between 8-10 weeks with my hand cut inlays, not to mention a very energetic 6 yr. old son! ( Not a lot of spare time!)

See prior newbie posts in the hobbies section,or my hand cut inlays: www.bordeauxinlay.com
So far I'm amazed at the info sharing presented here. Thanks!

I was really impressed with the ease of use that I saw with the online demo of OneCNC XR.

Before you make your choice, set up the online demo. It will answer 90% of your questions, and they can demo a part that you email them. Really, worth the hour.

1bordeaux I just received a McNeel update email last night and saw where Rhinocam is now available with the 4th axis module. I called Mecsoft this morning and got the price. $1500 till the end of May. I don't know if you need 4th axis or not but that is the best price you will find for a fully functional 4th axis cam that can do linear roughing as well as linear finishing along with rotary finishing. This package also allows for 4th axis hole drilling......whatever that is! My only hold up is the money! I emailed Mecsoft a file of one of my products back late last year and they did a demo for me. It was live using chat for conversing instead of the ph since I did not have dsl....still don't! That was one of the coolest things I have seen though.

Mike

ps I might add that the new version 20 from Bobcad will import Rhino 3dm files and if you try real hard you can get it considerablly less than either of the packages mention here so far.

That is some incredible work on your site.

I'd vote Onecnc, ease of upgrade to full 3d when the time comes and has rock solid customer support, hell the user support group is reason enough to go the Onecnc route.

At the very least get demos from all the CAM systems on your list, give them a file or two and see how the thing would work with YOUR work. That's the real way to decide.

Cool The race is on...

They're,(OneCNC & Rhinocam), running neck and neck so far; I did the live demo today with ONE and was very impressed.
i've heard nothing bad about either.

Has anyone had a bad experience with either?
Compatability problems?
