    Repackaging legal questions

I have an idea for a product that is a smaller quantity of an existing product.
I think this is called "repackaging" and is done with food and other products.

Lets say I want to buy a bottle of windex from the store, (or a 55 gal drum of windex) and put it in smaller bottles, (lets say 4 oz plastic bottles) with MY OWN label and a different name. And I want to sell it as cleaner for computer monitor screens....or as cleaner for aquarium glass.....
    This is just an example........

    Is this legal to do?
Are there any laws that prohibit this??

    Thanks
    D

    Repackaging

I think the biggest issue you will have is meeting OSHA requirements. As a supplier of chemicals you are required by law to be able to provide material safety data sheets (MSDS) to whoever asks for them. Unless you know exactly what is in what you are selling you are going to have a hard time figuring out what the appropriate safety recommendations should be. You could just get them from the original manufacturer and supply them to your customer that way, but I believe you have to leave the original manufacturer's name and address on them.

Also, I believe that you have to label what the chemical contents are in the back of the container. It is not as elaborate as the food industry were you have to put the nutritional facts.

I would contact a lawyer that specializes in these types of situations and ask for his/her legal advise on the matter

Another thing to consider. Depending on what your product is, it may not matter if the end user know what product it is. kinda like buying short lengths of wire for steppers on ebay. You know the exact product, you just don't need 500' of it. This wouldn't work for something you can already buy at small quantities, but will work for products that are normally sold in large quantities. This makes you a reseller and you should be able to use their information.
