    Default Variable vs fixed speed router?

    I did it...ordered myself a CNC table and Vectric Aspire software package. The CNC machine I bought accepts Porter Cable routers. I have essentially two choices: fixed speed or variable.

    Which would you recommend and why? Intuitively the variable speed would seem to give more flexibility, but I don't know which way I should go. I'll primarily be doing wood with this. Thanks!

    From my experience with variable speed power and torque are in direct proportion to the speed of the router while a constant speed delivers consistent torque and power. Check the power to speed ratio before purchasing a variable speed. Either way get the biggest baddest one you can afford you will probably find you will need it in the future.

    Variable. With a fixed speed router spinning at 23-27000, the ideal feedrates for some tools can be as high as 400-600 inches/min. More than likely, your machine won't be able to cut that fast (or even move that fast). You'll want to use the slower rpm to prevent burning and extend tool life.

    Hurrah! Sounds like someone that has burned a bit or two. This is a very good point and advice that should be taken seriously. This way you can adjust your speed and optimize your feedrate.
