Here's a link to my latest project. A Breadbox for my wife..

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/72853224/breadbox.crv3d

After cutting this out, you need to set your tablesaw to a 30degree angle and cut two of the piece edges at 30. One is the front piece with "Bread" on it, the other is the top piece.. A roundover bit is used on the side pieces and 3 sides of the front after glueup.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if I had even entered that week.. It was a great surprise to receive the email telling me I had won. For those wondering, I won a $50 gift certificate from a certain website run by Jeffery Birt. I've already spent it and my order is on it's way.

The original post should work if you remove the extra http:// from the link provided... oops

Ok, who out there is a carpenter, or real good at building things???

I have a wall in my living room that due to moving some things around, I want to build a full wall bookcase, as a built in. It's about 13 feet across, with a door in it, that's not centered.

Just wondering about types of wood to use for shelves that will take the weight of all the books and not bow like the cheap particle board units you can buy... I guess any rules about how 'long' shelves can be, and if solid is better, or some sort of ply..

At first I thought I'd like it stained nice, but have come to realize it would be better painted, as all the other trim in the house is painted..

    Thanks..

    Wood neophyte.

I generally use 3/4 inch plywood (oak or birch veneer). The shelves are 36 inchs long and the front has a 1 1/4 inch x 3/4 inch piece of maple or oak hardwood with a 3/8 x 3/4 inch rabbet to support the shelf and cover the cut edge of the plywood shelf. If you are going to paint the shelves use birch and for stained either birch or oak.

I have put all sorts of books (like encyclopedias) and there is no sag in the shelves after 20 or so years. The shelves can either be fixed or adjustable (pins).

+1 what Paul said. I have a bookcase with similar shelves holding a large collection of Fine Woodworking magazines, that is packed solid from end to end, with no sag at all. Mines only 12 years old, though.

Just try to find a good quality plywood. The cheap chinese plywood will be warped before you finish building anything.

Thanks for the info. Is there an easy way to tell from cheap ply to the good stuff? Just cost? Or don't buy it at home depot?

I read somewhere else to use birch if you are going to paint.

When I built my shelves, I used birch plywood and 1x2 poplar face frames. One thing I'd highly recommend is looking into a basic Kreg pocket hole setup. $50 or less will give you a REALLY nice capability to do hidden joinery. I didn't have a table saw or anything else to rabbet the front rails on mine, but they've held up perfectly with the front rails simply glued and pocket-screwed to the plywood.
I made my shelves 9" deep, and all but the most oversized books fit very well. The longest span I used was 36", and the full shelves don't sag, with a full-span rear rail support, (3/4" quarter-round) and the 1x2 front rails.

When I built a bookshelf 25 years ago for my wife, I used oak. The shelves are 36 inches and have not sagged a bit. I have really loaded them up too. Because I was concerned about sagging, I added a 1x2 across the front of each shelf. Do you have a design in mind already? As Luke said you cant go wrong with the Kreg pocket hole jigs.

Not sure on the whole design yet... but after speaking to the wife, and showing her pictures, it will be somewhat like the one in the attached photo... except Perhaps 3 foot tall cabnets that stick out further on the bottom, for more hidden storage... of course that means the 'bottom' shelf for books would be wider to allow for the oversized books and knick nacks and such..

I am realizing what the total cost of a 13 1/2 foot by 9 foot high is gonna be, so I might need to wait a month to buy all the wood (tax money back)...

Something new from my shop. I tried a new technique for finishing this using the "glazing" tech from the vectric forums. Also working on a graveyard plaque. My thoughts on it are to make it out of corian, I've got some two part epoxy which is black coloured which I will scrape into the letters I've engraved and finally I will epoxy the piece to a cinder block. If I need to I can surface the corian to remove any epoxy that shouldn't be there. I should just learn to engrave marble and be done with it, but this is good practice.. Epoxy was slightly more expensive than I should have paid at $90 for a gallon with a quart of hardener.
