Default how do i "scorch" routed lettering?

I volunteered to make some signs for the forest service and they spec scorched letters. google finds instructions on burned wood lettering, but I assume this project needs to be done with a flame after routering. has anyone done this?

I use a propane torch on a regular basis to burn my projects.. I did this sign for a small cigar shop on Saturday
After its freshly routed, before I sand, I take a propane torch and scorch it wherever I want
