    Default MSC Surface Grinder Questions/Tips

I have a clone of this surface grinder from MSC https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/09517970 . The brand is Lincoln if it makes a difference. I'm having issues getting a smooth grind with it. I've trued the wheels, balanced them as well as I can, although I'm new to doing that. I tightened the Z axis up to where it is almost difficult to move. No matter what I do I can't seem to get a nice grind. It always looks scalloped. I've tried very light cuts and heavy. The bed moves nice & smoothly, I can't feel any chatter in it.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get it to work better? I made a quick balancing shaft for it, but I'm not sure if it is any good. Is there a place I can get a decent one?

    Thanks!

    Mike

You might need to use a different wheel. It depends on the material that you are grinding. Normally you would use a harder wheel for softer materials and a softer wheel for harder materials. What material are you grinding?

Thanks for the tips. I'm not too sure, it was a block that came with it. Although I ground the magnetic table & it did the same thing. A friend have me a good wheel & it did the same thing.
I ordered a good balancing spindle & checked my wheel with it tonight, it seemed to be well balanced. I'll check the wheel hardness tomorrow.
    Thanks.
