    Default Oh Good Grief !

A school district in my area, (I won't say which one because it is too embarrassing) is discontinuing the use of the "Red" marker to grade papers, because it is not a friendly color, they now are going to use "Purple" because it is a friendly color. Next year maybe they can dress the boys in pink and the girls in blue, or maybe they can both wear pink and blue so that no one can tell what they are.

What a bunch of dumb A#% weenies !

We don't want to offend anyone by using red. If you can't spell, it's no big deal, we'll get them thru school anyway. They don't really need that education anyway.

You folks miss the point, we need to spend more money on education (have you not been listening to the Dem's and School Unions). We can teach them later in Jails, opps, we dont want to jail them after all, they are just mis-understood! So we will let then out of jail before they get a chance to get an education! Then, when they can't find a job, we will make employers hire them, then make them pay them far more than they are worth, which means we won't be able to hire them all, but we will give them a new social medical system to get into. Then when they need an education, it won't matter because they will suffer from some made up Phobia or Phycosis and end up on the government dole, then we will tax the people with money, and the corporations till they have no more! Then everybody will be equal, no education (its not fair after all to have some people smarter than other's), no job (why should only some people work) and no health care, GO John and John!

Of course if the teachers are doing their jobs it won't be long before purple is perceived as a lot less friendly :/ .

Why is it that every time something like this comes up there is a let’s blame the teachers and unions answer? Almost all the time this kind of stuff is driven by the parents, so let’s put the responsibility where it belongs. As an alternative to whining about the teachers, get involved in the school board in your district, it is the school board that tells the teachers what to do or not to do. ;-(

I've heard this one before, and I must say that I have good reason not to believe it. I'd ask for proof. This is the kind of thing that people make up and send around in emails to score political points. Democrats and teachers want to educate children because they will then grow up to be better and more productive citizens, to suggest otherwise is slander. I know plenty of Republicans that are a lot less strict with their children that I am. Republicans should be ashamed at the number of things they have simply made up and sent around in emails. Go to www.snopes.com and see if any of your favorite lies are featured.

It's true, unterhaus. Sad, but true.

As a parent and a teacher, I have a HUGE problem with this.

BigDaddyG hit the nail on the head.

"If you see a whole paper of red, it looks pretty frightening," said Sharon Carlson, a health and physical education teacher at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Northampton. "Purple stands out, but it doesn't look as scary as red."

This is apparently becoming more then a local issue, and you do see who is promoting it at that school don't you unterhaus, health and physical education teacher

I understand Office Max is pretty happy with the surge of Purple pen sales to replace all those frightening red markers that have been used since the 1700's.

    EDIT:
I am not picking on teachers, maybe the union, but not the teachers, but everyone has to see that they need to get a grip on what is important.

Probably means well, but I still say "OH GOOD GRIEF" and what a bunch of dumb A#% weenies.

I thought the point was that a page full of red was *supposed* to be scary.....

as in the assignment had lots of errors so you'd better pay attention?

It's not only the US though so don't feel bad. Blair and his looney's are doing much the same thing to UK schools too. My neice apparently came home from school (uk) in tears because she got a B math(s). Not because she had a B, but because the teacher gave her a hard time in front of the class and explained that she shouldn't be 'obsessing' on getting an A and asking what she did wrong. The paper didn't show where the error was. My niece is 11 and now thoroughly confused.

I remember when it was expected you'd fail a math(s) or engineering paper if you had grammer or spelling mistooks.... ah hell, there go's the average again...

    Fyffe555,
There is hope, your 11 year old neice is far to smart to ever debate the meaning of "is - is" so there is hope for the future, remember that! As common sense people, this political correct stuff is totally out of hand. I love the attack, I am either a father who is not involved in the school system, or, I am a smear republican (when the truth be told, I am a 26+ year regestered dem, who is a Zell Miller dem, who sees the now Socialist party I once belong to go wackie). Your niece, my son, most common sense people see what is wrong, and dispel this attack stuff for what it is.

I am sick of paying too much taxes (if you want to or feel your not paying enough, you can send more in, why should I have too), I am sick of not knowing that a marriage is between a man and a woman, I do not want Homosexuals as Scout Leaders because a Judge somewhere said I must, I could go on and on, but then I will be assulted by ..............

God Bless us one and all.......opps there I go again! I sure hope I did not offend any one by actually blessing them with my god......

I happen to live where there is a very good school system, and we pay taxes to match. You can be cheap and go with a lowest bidder school system, and you get under-educated kids who come to my town to rob the stores because nobody's making money out where they came from. The truth is, there is a balance between government services and the economy. There's a reason why Democratic controlled states pay more in taxes than they get back from the federal government, that's because their economies are better. You want to live in a low tax state, you get a low tax economy.

The worst crime in taxation is the social security tax. You pay 15% of your salary from the first dollar. Since 1983, 1/3 of each dollar you have paid is surplus to the outflow of money going to recipients. Right now, that 33 cents is going to pay for tax cuts for the rich, who don't pay Social Security taxes over ~$90000. Even though we are paying enough to keep SS solvent and save billions extra to keep it solvent in the future (2050 with no changes), the republicans are talking about raising the retirement age and lowering benefits. Of course, nowadays it's hard for a 50 year old to keep a job because of age discrimination, so what are we going to do until we retire? All so they can keep their tax cuts. There's nothing wrong with social security that wouldn't be fixed by leaving it alone, at least until 2050.

What does "my school system is better than your school system" have to do with the price of purple pens at Walmart?

This is not a money issue. I don't think the purple pens cost any less than the red pens. I also think the quality of the education is a direct result of the quality and knowledge of the instructor and the willingness of the student to learn, (also a direct relation to the instructor). It's not the 'high' cost of that particular school system like you think.

This is an issue where we've come to a point in our society where we can't tell students that they're doing badly, because it might hurt their feelings.

We are offending them by putting those nasty red marks all over their papers and tests to point out their mistakes. We're going to sugar coat everything everybody does that is "other than acceptable", (read; FAILING), and give them the impression that they're 'doing just fine'. Don't want to hurt their feelings, you know.

I am suprised they don't make it so the kids that actually do great work are still allowed to have their papers graded with green ink. Don't want to give the wrong impression if you know what I mean..
    :/rant:

Sorry, that just isn't the type of future employee I want running a $150,000.00 piece of machinery, democrat OR republican.

I want someone that knows if they put in the wrong number do some part of their job wrong, something bad might happen, and should not be taken 'lightly'.

Even if this story was true, they're still grading the papers, I feel some of these posts are implying that they are not doing that. My original thesis was that this story was not true. However, if you could get someone to learn better by using a different color ink, I say go for it, it really doesn't hurt anything. However, I doubt that it would work. If I thought someone was taking it easy on my kids to spare their feelings at the expense of their education, I'd make a stink. I have seen no indication of anything like that in my very liberal school district, they're tough and the kids get a good education with plenty of contrasting ink if they make a mistake.

    Just out yesterday,
The Demecrat controlled California, under strict Socialist control for many years now, 43% of the people in the City of LA CAN NOT READ! 38% in San Diego CAN NOT READ! That is the type of results you get from the Government when you put in control. God Forbid (Opps...there I go again...insulting people with the mear mention of GOD) they get control of our Health Care System. My Uncle who lives in BC Canada had to wait 3-1/2 years to get reconstructive knee surgery! Then they litterally threw him out in a few days to make room for some other poor sole (opps is sole a bad word). It costs $20+ to have a lunch at McDonnalds up there, Flush the John's and wipe off your Clinton if that crap comes here!

The teachers are great, but here in Fla, they are forced to join Unions they do not want to join. Just like the rank and file up north, they do not (unless they are brain washed with all this Socialist Crap) do not have a say how there money (dues) gets spent, that is why I NEVER buy anything that is Union made, it goes back on the shelf, I do not want a dime of my money going to the Democrat/Socialist/Com. party! I sold my Ford and drive a Saab! I purchase all my tooling from China! And, believe it or not, it kills me to have to do this and say this.

Default lunatic fringe, i know you're out there...

(by the way, if any kampers want to take this to email, please feel free; i am betting that there is not a manjack among you who would last more than one or two honest exchanges before you found your circumscribed worldview being challenged in ways you can't defend, then you'll resort to 'socialist/commie' namecalling and exit stage right... charleyy@alltel.net)

it seems pointless to 'argue' with people whose minds are made up beyond any hope of reconsidering their pet theories of why the world is the way it is; but i've bitten my tongue nearly clean through reading the bumpersticker morality which passes for thought among some of the louder mouths here...

(the other reason i hesitate to reply in kind, is that there is a huge amount i could learn from people here about CNC issues -including from rightwing hammerheads- and they are *exactly* the kind of resentful snots who would 'blackball' someone for their political views... so be it...)

firstly, i don't generally engage in grammar/spelling flames for online contributions for a number of reasons (not the least of which is because i am surely guilty of my share); but for someone -and yes, i mean you, big daddy g- who is sneering at the ill-educated masses you dismiss as less than human, you can't spell for ****... (you've got logic problems too...)

secondly, silly blatherings about the idiot democrats being the equivalent of 'socialists' or 'commies' (*sheesh* are you kidding me ? ) demonstrates you know nothing about either the theoretical or real-world political systems on planet earth... the on-the-ground truth of the matter is that *both* the repugnacans and the damnokrats are two faces of the same corporate money party... the repugs are ruthlessly, amorally upfront about it, while the dems are wimpy, chicken**** worms about their fealty to corporate interests...

thirdly, on the issue of teachers/schools: make no mistake, i don't absolve teachers as a class -so to speak- for all failings of the school systems, but they are just the obvious and defenseless whipping boys/girls for shallow thinkers who are looking for an easy way out... there *is* a direct -but not absolute- link between the amount a state spends per kid and the level of education they achieve... if you look at the rankings of how much states spend per kid, it correlates almost *exactly* with their educational levels...

(oh, if that *weren't* the case, then how come the exalted private/charter schools almost always spend *much* more per kid than the demonized public schools ? not to mention, in public schools, we have shortchanged our kids by eliminating 'non-essential' subjects like art, languages, music, athletic teams, and even phys ed, fer chrissakes ! yeah, the most advanced civilization ever... *snort*)

(oh, as an aside to big daddy g (not *that* big daddy near ocala, are you ?), do you think that the socialist/commie swedes making your saab aren't unionized ? oops, that didn't quite work out they way you thought, huh...)

    flame off...

Why Yes, I am "That Big Daddy" -Anytime!

My Saab is a 92 - Pre Union (American anyway). And I am not worried about my money going to Unions outside the States! My Ford was a 2003! So it did work out as planned.

As for the spelling - I was Public School Educated, so it is not the correct spelling that is the issue here, it is the message.

So, contunue to attack with threats, it makes my argument for me. You can't debate the issues so you attack me personally. Duh, my feelings exactly.

    Charley, 2 things;

    1) Please refrain from personal attacks. Thanks.

    2) If you would put more substance in your posts instead of just badmouthing everyone for everything, you'd probably get more (better?) responses.

The only constructive substance you put in your post was the old and busted "you gotta pay to educate".

I went to public schools. Mostly in Southern Ca, but 3 years worth in Oregon's Douglas Co. I learned more/faster/better quality in 3 years in Oregon, in an under-funded school with great teachers, than I did in the rest of my schooling in Southern Ca with lots of money and teachers that could care less about my education.
