If I had to guess, I'd say that limits are mechanical.
Homing is usually done with the index pulse from the servo.

I'm doing a presentation on machine positioning systems...
On the new industrial state or the art VMC and general CNC machines; what technology are thy using for limit switches or positioning checks. I find it hard to conceive mechanical switches are being used.
Just blurt it out if you actually know what companies are using what.....

Any thing else would serve no purpose, and cost a lot more
A lot are using proximity switches, as this part is only there to protect the machine, and for Homing, if some kind of problem, happened with soft limits, then you would be glad you had them, for homing the machine, once the switch is activated, the axes will back off until it finds the index pulse ( sometimes called Z pulse ) from the Encoder on the servo motor
