If the bit is sharp, you'll usually get a clean cut regardless of the type of tool.
Are you talking about carbide tipped steel shank tools, or solid carbide straight flute bits?
Carbide tipped can work well, and are inexpensive compared to solid carbide. They won't be able to remove material as fast as spiral bits, and can cause tearout in some cases where a spiral may not, but they are perfectly acceptable to use.
Some manufacturers make "cnc" version of carbide tipped straight bits, which have more aggressive geometry.
