Help converting stl file if possible

Hello, I am not new to this forum but cannot remember my old credentials...lol so now I am MP40cal.

Anyway, I bought an expensive $109 obj file of a vehicle. I have converted it to an stl file and am hoping I can somehow wood cnc machine from it. I have VCarve Pro and a number of CAM programs. My problem is when I orient the file to the view I want to machine the file does not get rid of the parts you cannot see. I only want to machine the visible portion of the file. When I import the stl into VCarcve Pro it imports the whole car, so when I look at it from an angle view and drop it into my material the front of the car still protrudes about an inch and a half of the material.

I know it may be hard to visualize and I may not be explaining very good. I only want to import or cut just the visible portion of the file.

I have tried to import or attach the picture I am trying to cut.

Do you have Rhino, or something to edit the .obj file with? Then you could zap the unwanted surfaces...

A screen shot from V Carve would help, as I don't understand what you want to to do?

I have not heard of Rhino. Is it expensive?

I don't use this stuff too much; I am strictly Solid Model these days; Solidwrks, ProEngineer... Rhino is the premium modeller that all the industrial designers use. Supposedly it does *Everything*.

So if you can trim the parts you don't want and convert the shaved part to STL again, then you should have it.

Ok, finally got the images from VCarve Pro. As you can see the first image shows where the placement is. The second two show after the object is set it recognizes the whole car and not just what you see. I only want the machined portion to stick up like 1/2" or less. I am hoping to use a 3/4" piece of material.

Since V Carve can't do undercuts, anything below the model will be filled in. There's really no easy way to clean that up with a full 3D model. What you want is a relief model.

Ok, relief is the word I think I was looking for. Is there any way to make a relief from this type of file?.....Please please say yes!
