DIY Steel mill
Hi!
i didn't really know where to post this but i have started plans for building my own cnc machine.
i would like to make it able to cut steel, but it doesn't have to be large.
the frame i designed is about 600mm x 500mm x 300mm. Now my question would be, what type of spindle would be best? does it need a high RPM or is a low one better?
And i thought about using a 10mm leadscrew, combined with linear rails. would this be able to take all of the force?
Thanks!
Anton.

For steel you will need 'low' RPM. A 24krpm spindle would be useless. I cut steel at 2,000 rpm with carbide cutters.
A 10 mm leadscrew is possible, but a 5 mm pitch is probably better for that area.
Linear rails - no problem at all.
Cheers

Re: DIY Steel mill
Hi, as it's still in the design stage a sketch of the proposed layout would speak volumes.
i assume that the size you posted refers to a CNC router layout.......the title of the thread states it's a mill.....two totally different design concepts.
For steel you can forget making a CNC router........that's mill territory.
Do you know the difference between a mill and a router.......and the difference between a moving gantry or moving table router?
Ian.
