Default What happend to the world - why can't people call something what it is??? (Rant)

    Good afternoon all,

Yes, I am an "old fart", been around for more than half a century, been involved with a great many things in my life time. Lately, there are things that drive me nuts and I am certain, there others that agree.....

Why is a programmer, now referred to as a "Coder" - really? WTH, do we need yet another description for something that is a half a century old!!!!

Why is it that on these hobby forums, people refer to a Bridge Mill as a Fixed Gantry - really? Look at the existing examples! Don't try to re-create something in your own words because it is new to you, look at the history!!!!

Why is a progam called .... Recipe, Sketch, etc.? Seriously, what the hell is going on in the world. A programmer, writes a program, thats the way it is, thats the way it has been since the beginning!!!!

I could go on and on with this, but why waste bandwidth. People really need to stop this need to "create a new name" for something because they either want to feel like they created something new or because they didn't take the time to understand the history of what they think they created.

Perhaps some of this movement for "making up names" comes from the P.C. police!

Help me in my attempt to get people to call things what they actually are...

Someone who writes a program of instructions for a computer (of any type) is a PROGRAMMER, not a "Coder" or "Hacker" or some other stupid new name.

A written set of instructions for operating a computer is a PROGRAM, not a sketch, not a recipe, not a "Whatever the hell name you come up with"

A machine that has a "FIXED GANTRY" is a BRIDGE, be it a BRIDGE mill, or BRIDGE ROUTER, stop making **** up!

Another peeve, "CNC It", really? People, especially in the hobby world have been using this phrase for "machining something on a CNC machine". Well, looking at the statement, wouldn't "CNC It" imply that you are going to "Computer Numerical Control It" with "It" being the machine, not the product created with the machine?

    Rant over.....

Coder is not the same as programmer. Just as machine operator is not the same as machinist.
And "sketches" are less scary for kids☺

Well on my opinion, Coding in HTML is almost the same process on programming G-codes, im considered in the new generation batch of the CNC guys, sometimes I use the word coding rather than programming G-code because in my mind they are like the same different fields but the same process sorry for that sir and sometimes I care less because english in not really my native language

I've never heard the term recipe sketch .
I've never used the term coder either. If a guy is standing at the machine inserting code for a new program , then "standing at the machine punching code" isn't an uncommon phrase . Because this guy is capable of inserting g code into a cnc , does it really make him a programmer , but maybe more of a coder (but not really) . I picture the programmer as being a guy who sits at a computer desk all day working with mastercam , then sends programs to the floor for the dogs to deal with .

Slang terms will always be around , new era new terms , but if a guy came into any shop I've worked in and said recipe sketch then he'd be laughed at

When I got into the machining industry , I was calling water soluble cutting fluid "jungle juice" , because 3 years of high school machine shop class was spent with the teacher saying "use more jungle juice" .

With that said , "coolant" is a major peeve of mine . Too many people think that coolant is only meant to keep the tool cool . I see it often enough where someone will ask about using engine coolant or some other bizarre fluid , without trying to understand that "coolants" are special formulated cutting fluids with varying grades for various materials and cutting conditions . That will lead to another post asking why is my finish so bad

Isn't a coder someone writing computer code, which is a non cnc type of programmer?

    I would think so .
"coder" is not an actual job title in the cnc world , not that I've seen anyhow . Guys can punch code but their title is usually something other than coder

Word "Sketch" is often used to describe programs written for arduino controller. I assumed they choose this name because "sketch" sound less intimidating than "source code"

My private definition: When boss tells me "find better solution for this problem" - i feel like a programmer, if he tells me "make it red" - like a coder, and when it's "customer asks why the hell did you make it red - he wanted purple" - like a code monkey
I write programs for computers - but im sure there are similiar situations in cnc work.

grg12 shush - your well stated, logical responses have no place in this rant thread. Here there should be only foaming mouths and typing in caps lock about other things that really don't matter.

Chris D - I hope, when I reach your age, the only thing I have left to be angry about is people hooping the frood (or whatever they called it a hundred years ago, or whatever they will be calling it again in another ten).

I couldn't agree more. When I finish my new machine I shall refer to it only by it's proper name.

"Moving Bridge Fixed Table CNC MillRouter"

No more of this moving gantry or fixed gantry nonsense speak! It's a bridge dang it!

Agreed. Punches for all the 20 year old wimps when they stupidly refer to a machine with a moving gantry instead of by it's proper name, a moving bridge.

Dang it! Mind Blown! Are you saying I can use home made beer, wine, or whisky as a cutting fluid? Would it be proper to refer to it as a coolant or a lubricant in that instance?

Suppose you could call it what you'd like , but as a Canadian I'm sure you can agree that it would be a whole lot cheaper to dump top of the line cutting fluids into a machine than dump a 24 of beer

I think a moving gantry CNC router sums up what it is without the term of moving bridge mill clouding the issue......also, a moving table or fixed gantry CNC router is a better descriptive term than a bridge mill any day......my opinion.......where did the term bridge mill come from, I've never heard of it before?

It's a bridge across the table like any bridge it spans something

Plank mills and huge bed shapers had the bridge configuration
same with a SIP jig Borer, way long ago
    it's just stable.

    Been doing this too long

Well, way back when Cocky was still an egg, I worked on quite a few planers and planer mills and they never got called bridge anything.

The Societe Genovoise jig borer is something like a moving table CNC gantry router......but I wouldn't class it as a router.

Now if you said column mill, that means exactly what it says, unless someone has a notion to call it a vertical mill which it is, but a knee mill is also that but it ain't a column mill.......where does the term turret mill come in?.....there ain't a turret on one......Bridgeports are called turret mills.....grrrrrr..

I also worked on horizontal borers and vertical boring mills.........funny that, as some call the vertical boring mills vertical lathes......which they resemble but are not in the sam4e category of work handling.

Yeah, and some call a centre lathe an engine lathe.....where's the bleeding engine I might ask.......is centre lathe too much to ask?

Oh yeah, and drills get called bits....they are used in a drilling machine but they ain't bits.....that's a carpenters word for an auger or bit with a brace to drive it.

Who calls a tool used in a lathe a tool bit.....you get form tools, parting tools and left and right hand knife tools, but they ain't tool bits......unsharpened and new they are blanks.

I guess that a chuck will never be put into orbit and a drill chuck cannot be called a rotational bit gripper ....ever.

I see some of the Chinese sellers on EBAY are saying that a 3 or 4 jaw chuck has claws......LOL.......velly funny.

My squirrel friend eats nuts, but they also hold most of my car and engine parts together.

Now that I'm in full swing....... rotary tables and dividing heads are not SU8PER SPACERS.....EVER.....no matter what the Chinese sellers on EBAY call them sometimes.

I'd like to keep a 4th axis as such and not an A drive which is what it really is.

In reality, I'm a coder and a programmer as I write only coded sequences compiled in a program that define how the mill must behave...........you can't tell a mill to "go 50mm to the right from zero"......it only responds to a simple coded sequence in a program to work wonders.
