Default Motor Tuning issues with MACH 3

    Hi All,

I have some issues with Motor Tuning with my CNC i have built

    i am using the following

    Chinese break out board
1PC 5 Axis CNC Breakout Board For Stepper Driver Controller Mach3 Power Module

    Stepping Motor Driver

Single Axis CNC Engraving Machine Stepper Motor Driver Controller TB6600 0.2-5A | eBay

    And nema 34 Motor

Nema 34 Stepper Motor 8.5Nm 5A 4-wire 14mm Dual Shaft DIY CNC Mill Lathe Router

    And Mach 3
    Step driver set to 1/16
    Ball Screw 8mm
    Pitch 2mm

    Steps 7000
    Velocity 100
    Acceleration 50
    Step Pule 0
    Dir Pule 0

The strange thing i can't seem to work out why it is doing this.

It work for a little bit sometime when i first boot it up and i can just jog the motor when i try to zero everything to run a simulation the motor step like 1mm per sec and sounds like it is struggling and is not tuned correctly.

So I go back to setting and try Auto Tune and the motor seems to work perfectly again it will move the 20mm that i set it to. When i try jog with the Keys the motor it only moves at 1mm and struggles even thou i have not changed the motor tuning.

I am not sure if i am missing something in Mach 3 or if my BOB is playing up.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Nathan

First, set you step and dir pulse widths to at least 5. That should make a difference.

Is this setup in inches, or mm's?

What voltage is your power supply?

You aren't likely going to get much speed out of this setup, as you have a motor that needs over 100V to work well, and you're drive can only supply half the current it needs. Combine that with a 2mm pitch screw, and it's a terrible compbination.

A motor 1/5 the size would easily outperform the one you have.

    If you are setup in mm's, you steps/unit should be 1600. (200steps rev x 16 microsteps / 2mm pitch)
    If in inches, it should be 40640. (25.4/2 x 200 x 1600)

Not sure where you got 7000 from??

    Hi Gerry,

    Thanks for your reply,

I am using it in MM

and are using a 24 volt PSU as per the spec

    24V 15A 360W CNC Stepper Motor Driver Switch Power Supply 220V 110V TB6560 | eBay

    Manufacturer Part Number 34HS46-5004D
    Motor Type Bipolar Stepper
    Step Angle 1.8°
    Holding Torque 8.5Nm(1204oz.in)
    Rated Current/phase 5.0A
    Phase Resistance 1.0ohms
    Recommended Voltage 24-60V
    Inductance 11mH±20%(1KHz)
    Weight 3.9kg

i am not sure i can put 100v in to the unit.

    Thanks

    Hi Gerry,

I have changes it to 1600 and step and dir to 5 it once again worked great for about 5 mins and just struggled check out the 2 video below

I have tried to hook it up to an Adruino and it seems to work fine with it stepping, so i can only think it is a MACH 3 or BOB issue.

If you can think of anything else I might be able to change it will help.

    thanks

    Nathan

Run Drivertest.exe in the Mach3 folder, and see if you get a flat line and steady pulse rate.
Note that laptops are not recommended for Mach3 use.

I would not expect to get any usable speed out of that combination of components you have.

    Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your help, I ran it up on a PC and wouldn't you know it, the laptop was the issue.

Thanks you so much for your help, now the motors seem to work at lot better I have them set the steps1600 and it spins up as it should i can play with the acceleration and get it working 100%.

    Thanks once again.

    Regards,

    Nathan
