Has anyone had this problem before, no crash? I was taking a .01" finish pass with a 1 1/2" end mill with 8" of flute and it just snapped, It was only moving 20IPM. Is that too much? It doesn't seem like it would be with some of the roughing I do but?
That's a big cutter for that cat number 40
Put the holder on a Rockwell hardness tester and tell us the number.
This is more likely an old stress crack that propagated at that time..
I'd have to send out to get the hardness tested, but I was also thinking/hoping it was a flaw. It was a brand new holder, had just got it that day, but its a cheap one, maybe that was the problem. I knew it was big for the holder but I figured I'd be ok taking a .01" pass in 6061 with it.
No hardness tester? take a file to the holder see if it cuts then test a known hardened piece, The old guys did it this way.
New holder was flawed ? wow.
