    Default STRINGERS IN 1018 MARTERIAL

We are turning 1018 and getting lots of stringers. Our New GM doesn't like to see them in hoppers, but in the past it has always been a problem with this gummy material. We have tried a lot but not every insert out there, we use mostly Iscar or Tungaloy WNMG 432 or DNMG 432 inserts. We normally are cutting .100 per side, 6oo sfm and .010 fpr. Any thoughts on eliminating the stringers? Thanks

1018 can be extremely gummy and can be very tough to break a chip. The chipbreaker I have had the most luck with to break chips in 1018 is the Kyocera XS Chipbreaker. Kyocera has a series of chipbreakers designed to break the chips in gummy low carbon steels, here is an image showing their top chipbreakers for low carbon steels depending on DOC

There CA515 Grade is excellent for 1018 Steel, here is a link to the DNMG and WNMG inserts we recommend:

    https://www.toolhit.com/products/tab08580

You will have the best chip control if you lower the DOC to .060"-.080" per side with this chipbreaker and then run at 690 SFM and .012" IPR.

    Hopefully this helps!

    Mike
