Nice projects , thanks for the pictures.

It is always nice to see how the files posted end up as actual creations.

Points would be nice in place of the circles as you mention.

    Default A tad OT

Guy's I've been reading this forum and as a machinist I have an urge to do some hobby work at home.
It appears some of you use cnc routers to carry out your work so I would like to know which model would be good for a beginner?
I would probably only want to machine no bigger than 12" square and possibly in 3D.
Software and I can source, I just need to know a router and price guide.

    Hi cnchammer,

Speaking for myself I made mine from scratch. THE most expensive parts were the stepper motors, controller, and software. My total inventsment (WHEN I STARTED) was about 400 to build my cnc router. My table dimensions are 48x24 with an approximate effective cutting area of 20 x 36.

One I had all the parts I built it in 2 days. I used 1/4 all thread for the leadscrews and roller skate bearings and KCAM for the software. I had a old computer lying around that I use to control the machine with a interchangeable dremel or small router tool as the cutter. I bought my motor and controller here http://www.stepperworld.com/FET3dynamo.htm While I know that there are probably bettter controllers out there like GECKOs I wanted a plug and play system that was reasonably prices. THE same with KCAM and speaking for myself I have no regrets. It works and it works for me.

Be aware your wife won't like this as it is veryyyyyyyyy addicting and time consuming.... I looked at a complete system but to me they were priced too high for me. Of course I'm a DIYER.... Both KCAM and Stepperworld supported their products 100% with great support as needed.

I hope this helps....You can do a search on utube for a home made cnc router that you can make at home. I lost the link but its there somewhere with good instructions and a video of how to. In the end I would build your own. Is really pretty simple just a little time consuming. BTW here is a picture of home brewed cnc router.

dxf is an AutoCad vector file format. I don't know a thing about MasterCam but if it can't accept that dxf version, try running it thru ACad and convert to another version. This is the only version I have small enough to post here.

    Swemill,
You said you tried to "export" the file? (Export is to send) "Import" is to bring in and is the command you are needing. Mastercam is very good at "Importing" DXF files.

    Default Drawing help?

I am wanting to know the best way to convert an image. I am looking at a poster board cut out (and get asked to do this alot) and need to convert it to a clean dxf file to laser cut. It is time to stop killing myself freehanding the artwork if that is possible. What software and what hardware do I need.
    Thank You
