Looking for a solid carbide drill for production aluminum drilling
Application is drilling a 9/16" hole into 6262-T6511 (similar strength to 6061 but much better chip breaking). Hole depth is 1.375" but access is more like 3.5" deep (max). Drilling about 100-200 holes per day ongoing (could run for years). This is on a 15hp lathe. Through-tool coolant, low-pressure only.
I can get an indexible drill for about $500 plus $100 in inserts. Feedrate is low, about .004" and less. And I've had chatter issues with smaller indexible drills with deep access. I expect the steel bodies have an effect on this.
We do have access to a pro tool sharpening house. I'm wondering if I should be looking for a solid carbide drill, maybe three-flute. Get two, and when one gets dull, send it out for sharpening.
Anyone have any suggestions on which route to take, and/or particular drill lines to look at?
