How do large format open bed lasers work? Safety?

Hi CNC Zone!

I have used a few different laser cutters up to A0 size. I am deciding between a 8ftx4ft router and a 8ftx4ft laser for working with sheet materials. All the large lasers I see this size are open bed format i.e. not enclosed marble cnc router,glass engraving machine,cylindrical cnc router,advertising cnc router

My question is how to these machines work from a safety point of view? How is extraction handled? Do they need a dedicated sealed room that is not accessed when the machine is in use?
