Need to cut pure nickel shims .002-.003" thickness
What kind of laser do I need to do this and what power? Whats the cheapest one I can get so I can prototype? If the project goes forward I would purchase higher quality machine. This is more a "proof of concept".

For test probably fiber with low power (used Chinese 30-40W?) will do, but before you go just try to go some other shop and check if surface/cut quality is good enough for your needs. Personally I have no fiber, so cant help you. Note - prices are NOT very low - will say 3k$ range. From my experience and knowledge typical small and cheap CO2 laser (100W range, prices from 2k$) will be NOT working for you at all.
