Default Need to install an interlock safety switch

I recently acquired a 40W Chinese Laser cutter/engraver that does not have an interlock switch. I would like to use the machine in a secondary school environment and need to have the interlock switch for safety. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but do want to get the best switch for the job. There are a wide range of products out there with a wide range of price tags. Any body have advice on a particular product that I should get?

What is your definition of Interlock, there is the Normal E-stop circuit which Every CNC machine should have, there is also a key lock-off.
The basic E_stop is simple to implement and should disconnect power to any motive power devices and hazardous sections.

    There are several examples there.
Do you have a circuit diagram of the machine? Also earthing is a consideration which Chinese machine are notorious for omitting.

I think he wants a switch that keeps the laser from firing if you open the lid

Yes, I need a switch to cut the laser when the lid is opened so I don't have students cutting their fingers off etc.

    Limit switch, proximity etc?
Could be tied into the E-stop circuit.

Echoing the same with the emergency stop switch. If your machine has a button to enable lasing on the control panel, you could easily install a microswitch tied directly into that switch (usually going to the power supply). The machine would go about it's normal movement, but lasing would be interrupted at that time...effectively ruining the job -- but a ruined cut is better than a permanently burned cornea. It takes no time at all for specular reflection to damage your eyes.
