    Default variable laser power

I'm thinking of buying one of those cheap lasers ( around 40W). I am wondering if it would be be possible to vary the power while cutting by using the z axis output of linux cnc, by,for example connecting a small stepper to a variable resistor?

Just change the control board to a ramps board. It can take g-code and vary the laser output. Lots of info on Google.
