Default What engraving machine should I get?

    Hi all,

I'm pretty new here and to the laser engraving industry. Am looking to do a small business involving engraving of name card holders. Any idea what type of engraving machine should I use?

I understand fibre laser will be good to engrave on metal but is there any good ones I can get without blowing my budget?

    Appreciate all your help!!

    Hi Brounbbear,

What is the material you want to engrave? How many hours per week you intent to run the machine?

If you live in Singapore you should be able to get an inexpensive machine from China easy.

If you want to engrave mostly text and the readability is the main concern, probably even the cheapest machines will do the job.

Check if the fumes from lasering the card material are toxic. If that is the case think where to place the machine and how to ventilate it properly.

    Hi Storen,

    Thanks for your reply!
I'm looking at engraving stainless steel actually.
It will be mainly text I intend to engrave, and possibly certain logos.
The last time I check, engraving on stainless steel should get minimum fume/toxic.
Not sure if you have any recommendations for any machines from China.

I see. You need a fiber marking machine then. They are never cheap tho.

I don’t have much experience with fiber lasers but I’ve heard very good things about Bodor’s machines and their after-sale service.

    Here is the website:
    http://www.bodor.com/products/laser-marking-machines/

These machines will only mark/engrave the steel.

If you want to be able to cut it you will have to spend a fortune on a different machine.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

You have another option too - instead of engraving you can mark the steel with black or red inks specially made for CO2 laser machines.

The popular brands are TherMark, SpectruMark and CerMark

You can use any CO2 laser engraving machine for that.
In fact I would advise to get something inexpensive for a start and upgrade later only if you have to.

Thanks for your recommendation. I've touch based with bodor to ask for quotation.
Will the end result of CO2 machine coupled with Cermark be the same as that of a fibre laser?

No, they will look very different:

With CerMark the text will look like printed with black ink. The process is also slow and messy.

With the fiber last the text will have different texture and it can be slightly darker or lighter than the original color of the metal. You can even make it tinted in some color just by adjusting the laser settings. It will look better and it will be significantly more precise. The engraving will take just a couple of seconds.
