Default Which one? Minitech GX 5 Axis or Tormach PCNC 770

    Hello everyone,

Now please excuse me I'm new and don't know much about CNC milling at all. I'm looking at getting myself a cnc milling machine to make small sub .5cc two stroke diesel engines and w ould like any suggestion to machine I should look at. I've requested quotes from Minitech and Tormac, but if anyone can suggest a cheaper hobby machine it will be welcome. I can post picture of parts if you would like more info. I don't want to spend much more than $15k. The photos are only for illustration and are not the engine I'm looking at building, but similar.

for those parts, you going to need both, lathe and mill too...

    NL-150 Shop Series CNC Lathe

    NM-145 Bench Series 2

you also can go on the route buying the grizzly mill and the conversion kit.. I believe somewhere 2500-3000 you have a decent small mill..

Thanks mate, this may sound very dum as I said I know nothing about these things, but why would one go for a mill and lathe not a 4 axis cnc mill?
Which grizzly model were you referring too?
I suppose the NL-150 and NM-145 can be used for hardened steel or cast iron(pistons and sleeves)?

    well

some parts, even can be made on 4th axis, faster with lathe... and simpler..

while I did not mention, even you have lathe still you need 4h axis..

    ================================================== ==

by the way, you can try to buy only a mill and experimenting..

this is the grizzly mill many folks converted to cnc

In the same boat and pretty much the same type of parts/features.

I've weighed various options from EBAY CNC machines from China, to DIY, and now have come full circle to the complete CNC via Tormach and others.

My rationale...was interested in the DIY part so I can build my system with my own 2 hands...blah blah blah. But after some serious thinking, I wasn't really interested in building the machine but the parts that it needed to make so I can build my "real stuff".

There is a company who started his posts on here and a user just received his 1st mill. Skyfire SVM-0 model ($3700). You can see the build on the forum. Be careful though, make sure you read through the full thread, growing pains of an international mfr? I would jump all over this mill, but reluctant to order and unknowingly wait.

I'm leaning towards the Tormach at 6895 or even buying a used system. You can easily begin to float towards the used HAAS markets for around 10-12k. I know, my budget was really only 2500-3500. But started doing pros-cons and my time was getting expensive.

Just saw Minitech, what was their base price?

    Just my 2 cents.

Seriously 12k for a base CNC and further upgrades pushing the system to almost 20k?

For these prices, I could certainly look for a used HAAS or even purchase a base Tormach for 7k. Wow, and this is for a small bench top mill?

I'm not running a machine shop for production but for my own needs. Making parts for others is not my priority in the sense of a job-shop. Speed is important but only because I'm impatient. I would prefer some level of precision and repeatability but I don't want to purchase Mori-seki type mills either. WTF?

Sounds like I might have to do a Seig conversion to get these prices or hopefully the Chinese guy Skyfire can get his act together so I can buy from him.

    Sigh...

I have doubt about these machines could deal with tolerance these miniatures requiring..

0.01 mm already makes difference , in fact compression decreasing too much...

hardly can visualize example you making the cylinder head, or pistonrod..

cylinder inside not only need to be within tolerance also the hole need to be ""honed"""

while parts are not ""complex"" companies that producing commercially they have serious setup for.. measuring a 5-7 mm hole 20-30 mm length ... is not simple..

    good luck with your project...
