It's not something the Hawaiian airline had counted on - passengers weighing the craft down with too many doughnuts.

But such is the craving for Krispy Kreme's sweet delights on Maui that people leaving the island regularly try to jam several boxes of the treats into their overhead lockers.


Mark Dunkerley, president of Hawaiian Airlines said: "The locals bring so many boxes of doughnuts on board that we can't always fit them on our flights.

"Some people will put five or six boxes in an overhead bin."

Hawaiian residents are thought to be taken with the relatively new phenomenon of a doughnut chain store on the islands.

And they are also using the food to fulfil the custom of omiage - bringing gifts home to friends and family.
