Machine speed for 3D printing

I am currently working on a CNC machine that uses a commercial XY table. It will use a router for a spindle, but I would also like to be able to remove the router and add a printer extruder for 3D printing. Without any 3D printing experience, I have no idea what kind of machine movement speed I need for printing. Is there a general minimum speed to get good results?
