G540 Based Controller Wiring Diagram

HI,

I have produced a wiring diagram for a 4-axis stepper controller based around the G540 drive.

It should be a help to those wanting to to put their own controller together. The diagram can be found towards the bottom right of the following page.

Hopefully there aren't too many errors.

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi,

I've updated the schematic to V3. It now is split into 2 pages. The first contains what is in the Controller. The 2nd contains external bits and pieces.

I've added a cooling fan (Gecko Chiller) to the diagram as well.

The schematic is still in the same spot at;

Tomorrow I'm off for the Annual family camping trip at Port Fairy for 2 weeks. It's on the Western Coast of Victoria.

Cheers,

Peter.

I know that phomann is gone for the next couple of weeks, but i received my CNC electronics package for Christmas and am having a little trouble following the wiring diagram that he has put together. i am hoping that someone will be able to help me out. My question is in regards to the relays. What is the purpose of the second IEC socket and the Auxilary Socket Output? If i follow correctly, the first socket is the main power (effectivley plugged into the wall) and from there it goes through a relay and output2 to power another socket. however this socket would be at 48 volts or whatever your power supply is, correct? and the Auxilary Socket Output would just be a standard recepticle?
Also, i would assume it would be possible to connect all three grounds into power IEC so that it was all grounded through the main power cord. It is drawn as seperate grounds and i just want to make sure there is no reasoning for this.
Sorry if these are very dumb questions, this is all just so new to me. Thanks!

The IEC socket will be at mains voltage, not 48V! The IEC socket is for switching a separate mains powered device e.g. a router.

The relay control is at 48V (or whatever voltage your DC power supply is)

The auxiliary relay output is just that, a relay controlled, NO (normally open)connection. What's connect to it is up to you as long as it is within the specification of the relay used.

The separate grounds can be made to a common connection that is electrically connected to the chassis.

I found an internet cafe. We're camping rough.

OK, The first relay is connected to a IEC socket, not an IEC plug, which is used for the power inlet. You can use this to switch a spindle motor on/off, or a coolant pump etc. This is switching mains voltage. You could use one of these adaptor cables to plug your spindle in to, or make your own.

The 2nd relay, is just switching a pair of contacts. Think of it as an automatic toggle switch. There is no voltage connected to a toggle switch, even though you can flick the toggle from side to side. You can use it for whatever you want. One use could be to switch the forward contacts of a VFD. Another may be to activate/release a spindle break.

If you have a metal enclosure, All three earths need to be connected to the metal enclosure. Yes you can tie them all to the one point first. If you are doing this, why not tie them all to the Earth screw connector on the 48V power supply? Then have an Earth lead from there to the metal enclosure.

If the enclosure is plastic, then just tie them all together (At the 48V power supply Earth screw connector.

Either way the earth needs to exit the controller via the Earth pin on the IEC power input plug.

I may change the schematic to show this. ( as a star connection)

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi ,

Just a quick note to let you know that version 5 of the schematic is now online. It now includes the freewheel diodes for the relays, a star connected earth and a few other improvements.

The schematic can be found towards the bottom of the following page.

Hi,

I've done Revision 8 of the schematic. It shows a bit more information on
connecting the G540 to a VFD.

The schematic can be found at the bottom of the CNC Controller Kit page.

Hi,

The VFD connector allows you to control a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) that is used to control spindle motors.

These drives can accept an isolated 0-10V control voltage that is used to set the speed of the spindle. The VFD connector presents the signals;
  • +10V Supply Input
  • Control Voltage output
  • +10V supply Ground

These 3 outputs can also be used to control many of the DC motor Speed controllers such as the KB Electronics KB-120drive and others. These 3 signals replace the manual speed potentiometer on the drives.

Cheers,

Peter

Thinks for the fast shipping.

I have a couple of questions.

What is an enable switch?

On the limit switches what motors are controled by what output 1,2,3,4?

Hi,

The enable switch shown on the schematic allows to to disable the motor outputs. This is useful for when you want to manually adjust the axes when setting up etc.

The schematic shows all the limit switches connected in series and going to input 1. Similarly, the home switches are also connected in series and are fed into input 2.

When homing, Mach3 knows which axis has hit a home switch as it is controlling the axis movement.

Cheers,

Peter.
