am I ok to use a 48V power supply?

I am running 4 motors at 3.5 amp phase current and have seen a power supply which is 48v, 8.3amp (ebay item number 390048815410).

It has been suggested that 48V is very close to the max voltage, and all it takes is a small amount of BEMF or AC line voltage fluctuation above 230V and the DC may go up above the 50V.

Is this a potential problem or would I be ok here?

You will be fine with a 48VDC power supply. When we say 50VDC as a rating we mean 50VDC; the G540 is de-rated to take BEMF and component tolerances into account.

Your 8.3 amp supply is a bit low for running 4 motors though. The rule of thumb is 2/3 total amperage thus 4*3.5*.67 = 9.3 amps so you should probably look for a 10 amp supply.
