G540 and EMC2, need help with setup

Hi

Just got a Geckodrive G540 along with a 48volt 7,3amps power supply and four Keling KL23H2100-35-4B steppers.

I hooked up one of the steppers today to the G540 without a current resistor (read somewhere that it would work ok) and used EMC2 ver. 2.2.8 on an Ubuntu computer.

In emc2 I used the standard settings for Gecko drivers. Got it working good, but I have a few questions I hope someone could answer.

In case 1 (attached screenshot with microstep=10) the motor had a velocity of 8550 something (?)when running G0 rapids. Not losing steps I think (how can you see).

In case 2 (attached screenshot with microstep=2) the motor had an (insane) velocity of 45600 something (??) when running G0 rapids and I could not see the motor loosing any steps. The motor would not run feeds under 700 mm/sec (the emc2 program showed movement, but the motor stood still).

What is the appropriate microstep setting? I tried both 2 and 10 in the microstepping option as you can see. What does that number mean, an what are the consequenses of changing it?

Ok, I now realize that the G540 is a static 10 microstepping drive.
